The range of Metabowls consists of two basic types of glass metabolic cages, which are either glass lidded for air/flow work, or have a Stainless steel open mesh lid. All Metabowls have a glass living chamber approximately 248mm I.D. x 165mm high. The Metabowl separator has been specially designed to ensure efficiency in use and the inner top tube of this apparatus is mushroomed out so that all feces are carried forward to the collecting flask. The urine flows around the walls and is fed into a collecting flask by a special trap. Care has also been taken to see that no urine can collect in the main chamber of the Metabowl so that complete flow to the collection flasks is ensured, nor can the urine enter the feces collector or gather in the separator itself.

Each separator has a sidearm for air take-off. The only metal used in this cage that the animal will come in contact us is a stainless steel floor grid. All glassware in the Metabowls is made from borosilicate, heat-resisting and can be sterilized. The Metabowl Major system is for rats up to 300 grams and complete systems include a carbon dioxide (CO2) absorber and alkaline (Nil-Ox) absorption columns. The systems are also available without the CO2 absorber and alkaline absorption columns. The system is supplied with a standard pellet feeder. Soft mash and cigar type feeders are available. Ring stands for columns are not included with the system.
